Nobody knows;  it's an article of faith.  Muslims say God gave the words of the Qur'an to Muhammad, who recited it for his people.  Then the people supposedly wrote down what he said on anything that was at hand, and preserved it for future generations.  When the caliphate (Muslim leadership) arose after Muhammad's death, eventually some of them ordered the Qur'an put into book form.  So the answer really depends on how you define that act of "writing" the Qur'an.

the Quran was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) by God through angel Gabriel (AS). Prophet Muhammad then dictated it to his companions and instructed them to memorize it. The Qur'an was not only transmitted orally but was also written down during the life time of the Messenger (saw). An example of this is when Umar bin Khattab(ra) converted to Islam, he wanted to see the leaves his sister was reading (Ibn Hisham pg.156). Ibn Umar narrated that Muhammed (saw) said : "Do not take the Qur'an on a journey with you, for I am afraid lest it should fall into the hands of the enemy." (Sahih Al-Bukhari Vol 4 No. 233). This indicates that the Qur'an was a written document.

Abu Bakr, the first Muslim leader after Muhammad's death, asked Zaid ibn Thabit to collect all the different writing materials on which the Quran was written down.

And to do away with any differences Uthman [Usman] codified and wrote down the text. Uthman also commissioned a committee (including Zayd and several prominent members) to produce a standard copy of the text.

The Quran so compiled was finalised by Uthman and accepted generally.

Well, Mohammed is supposed to have recited it (some say he was coached by an ex-priest). It wasn't written until several years after his death, when the Muslim leadership noticed that the oral recitation of the Koran was beginning to contradict itself.

If you mean the Holy Qu'ran, Dana seems to have clarified a simple question.

Though I'm not a Muslim, I feel it seems to have most of the writings of the Old Testament in the Holy Bible. Interpreted differently, as it was initially in Arabic and keeping with the Arabs of the day in that particular area.

The Hadith included into the Holy Qu'ran could certainly not have been revealed by the Angel Gabriel. This is where a devote but illiterate Muslim can be misled.

Its more like the fabled Chinese whisper.

Extensive research conducted in middle east has proven beyond  doubt that Quran was written by a Syrian christian priest known as AlBukhari. AlBukhari was thrown out of christian church by the reigning Pope, for his controversial views on sexuality. To extract revenge on the Pope, he founded a new religion which is now known as Islam. As AlBhukari was white, it was difficult for him to interact with the nomadic murderous arabs, so he chose Mohammed who was a notorious and feared brigand in the Arabian peninsula. Though Mohammed was illiterate, he was ferocious and few dared to oppose him. AlBhukari used him as a front to spread the religion he founded

AlBhukari wrote the book quran and declared that the book was passed on to earth by Allah himself. He also declared that Mohammed was the last prophet of Allah and it is the duty of Mohammed and his followers to spread Islam all over the world.

AlBhukari also decreed that anyone questioning the authenticity of Quran or tries to change the interpretation, should to be put to death as the person is the enemy of Allah.

Due to these stringent rules, Islam hasn't changed for the last 1400 years and unlikely to do so in the future. Even in this century Muslims believe that Allah lives on the moon, and once a year visits Kaaba during summer  coincident with Hajj
