  1. Alfonso XIII (May 17, 1886 – February 28, 1941), King of Spain was proclaimed King at his birth. His father, King Alfonso XII died 6 months before his birth. His mother, Queen Maria Christina, was appointed regent during his minority. In 1902 attaining his 16th year, the King assumed control of the state. On 15 January 1941, Alfonso XIII abdicated his rights to the Spanish throne in favour of his fourth, but second surviving, son Juan, father of the current king Juan Carlos of Spain. Alfonso died in Rome in 1941, and  in January 1980 his remains were transferred to El Escorial in Spain.

  2. Alphonse XIII of Spain (May 17, 1886 – February 28, 1941) was actually born (and proclaimed) King of Spain on May 17, 1886, having been born posthumously (his father Alphonse XII died November 25, 1885). His mother, Maria Christina of Austria, was proclaimed regent until Alphonse reached the age of majority (16) in 1902 where he assumed control of the state.

The widowed queen (queen dowager) Maria Christina of Austria had given birth to two daughters and was pregnant when her husband died. The eldest daughter Maria de las Mecerdes was the heiress presumptive with the title Princess of the Asturias as she had no brothers.

A interregnum was declared until the queen gave birth. Had Alphonse been a girl, his eldest sister would have retroactively become Queen of Spain. Since he was born a boy, he was King of Spain from the moment he took his first breath.

Alphonse, having been exiled during the Spanish republic, abdicated his rights and prerogatives in favour of his second eldest surviving son, Juan, father of the present king Juan Carlos, on January 15, 1941. He died later that year in Rome and his remains were transferred to the Escurial in 1980 where they rest in the Pantheon of the Kings.

Alphonse XIII is the paternal grandfather of the current king, Juan Carlos.
