if my second cousin is my dads firsts cousins child does that mean my third cousin is my dads second cousin child etc? thanks

Yes, exactly.

Children of siblings (a fancy name for brothers and sisters) are first cousins.

Children of first cousins are second cousins.

Children of second cousins are third cousins.

And so on.

Your dad's first cousin, on the other hand, is your first cousin once removed, or 1C1R.

His second cousin is your 2C1R.

Your GRANDdad's (and mom's) cousins are yours twice removed, and on back.

I know some people who are President John Adams' first cousins - 7 times removed.
