long story short, two countries wanted Independence from Georgia, as that would take a chunk out of a already small country georgia moved in armed forces to 'pacify' it, Russia, wanting to expand it's influence and gain two more allies supported the moves for independence and went to war against Georgia crushing their army.

Georgia then sued for peace, russia refused at first but i think they now have a peace plan, which i think was made by French president Sarzosky (sp)(unsure though)

Both are currently blaming each other for genocide, ethnic cleansing, the usual.
