who is he, and if not a person what does he stand for?

  2. Uncle Sam is the figure that symbolizes the United States. Originated during the War of 1812.The term Uncle Sam was originally came from the large initials US that meat trader and US Army meat inspector Samuel Wilson (09.13.1766-07.07.1854) who obtained the US Army contract to provide beef during the War of 1812.

    The beef was shipped in barrels (which were the property of the US Govt) but stamped with the US initials solders and Teamsters joked that the initials stood for the meat supplier Sam Wilson.

    The cartoon of Uncle Sam first appeared in the 1850's and was used with stunning success in the famous WW I I WANT YOU poster On 15th September 1961 the US Congress passed a resolution that recognized Uncle Sam as a national symbol.
