  1. Far too vague a question!  There are hundreds of horses that could qualify as "best horse ever"!

Also, learn to look outside your own shores - horses race outside American you know!

Some horse that I consider to qualify for this title, in no particular order:

    Eclipse

    Arkle

    Sea-Bird

    Nijinsky

    Persian Punch

    Phar-Lap

    Secretariat

    Brigadier Gerard

    Mill Reef

    Giant's Causeway

    Rock of Gibraltar

    Montjeu

    Ouija Board

    Oh So Sharp

    Dubai Millennium

I could go on and on!  Be more specific with your question, and we can be more specific with our answers.

  2. Big Red (Secretariat)...

  3. Secretariat. My namesake... Go For Gin (Go for Gin was retired to stud in 1995 at Claiborne Farm in Kentucky. In 2004 he was sold to Bonita Farm in Darlington, Maryland. His stud feed as of 2007 is US$4000. He is the sire of Albert the Great who retired with lifetime winnings in excess of US$3 million and has sired Nobiz Like Shobiz. His runners have an average US$71,742 per starter. He has sired seven stakes winners. In total, Go for Gin offspring have netted more than US$22 million in career winnings.)

Seattle Slew, Spectacular Bid, Cigar, Dance Smartly ( Canadian Triple Crown winning filly), Northern Dancer, Sunday Silence and Easy Goer, Alydar and Affirmed, John Henry, Go For Wand (buried at Saratoga's infield)

I could go on and on, but my hands down favorite is Secretariat.

*** No slight to the UK, Aussie, Irish, Japanese horses intended! We here in the US RARELY get to see any racing other than our own. The only times we really get a good look at any other horses is at Breeder's Cup Time, and that is such a brief look! I couldn't even find any coverage of The 'ARC! Hard to believe as this is one of the most famous races !

  4. Hopefully, you are talking about racehorses. If you are, I can name my favorites. Charismatic, 1999 Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner (even though he went off at 8-1, Menifee the favorite at 5-2). He suffered a broken left leg in the Belmont Stakes. One of my favorite jockeys, Chris Antley, rode Charismatic. Secretariat is one of the big ones. He was just an awesome racehorse and truly his story is one that is amazing. Seabiscuit was the low class racehorse that beat everyone, even though no one thought he could do it. These are just a few of my favorite racehorses!

  5. Difficult.

    Man of War, Northern Dancer.

And of course, Toots! (a shetland pony we had that was great with kids)

  6. desert orchid was one of the best horses.so was red rum and red maruarda. you should know that these 3 horses was known as"the three kings" so the three of them are the best horses ever.

  7. you only seem to name us horses so i'll add some aussie one's

pharlap (big red) won everything in australia including 4 races in 7 days, then went to us and won then you guys poisoned him

makybediva, wins melbourne cup 3 years in a row, record will never be touched.

    go aussies.

  8. My favorite ever is Ruffian.  She never lost... she never even let anyone in front of her.  I think she could take on the greatest and win.

But Melissa is right...  there's too many great horses to name one as the greatest...  especially since they never had the opportunity to race against each other.

  9. well this is a very hard question because there really is more then one horse that was the best....

we have Man O' War, who won 20/21 starts.

we have Secretariat, who won the Belmont Stakes by 31 lengths and has a Kentucky Derby record still untuched today.

we also have Ruffian, the filly who won 10/11 starts but broke down in a match race between her and Foolish Pleasure.

and of course we have Barbaro. who won 6/7 starts. winning the Kentucky Derby by the largest margen in 60 years. but sadly broke down at the Preakness Stakes and struggled to survive for 9 months but on January 29, 2007 he got put to sleep.

now of course i am missing many more horses but these are some of your tops. so you decide... ☺

    -mel

    RIP BARBARO

  10. Seabiscuit, Barbaro and Secretariat.  Man O War was great until Seabiscuit came along and beat the Cr** out of him.

  11. Seabiscut, hands down. he beat man'o'war in his 1 on 1 race with him. he was the underdog everyone rooted for. Forget the stats and the wins and the breeding. Seabiscut was the horse of the nation. it hurts to see no one has mentioned him at all. in the western riding world i think it is holloywood dunnit, beautiful buckskin stallion. champion of champions. and of course, my horse, lol. she IS the best horse ever!

  12. Rudolph.

  13. barbro-rip

  14. imposable to answer you'll only get biased opinions

  15. I can only think of 2,RED RUM and ARKLE,never mind the flat shower, these  horses were the epitome of guts and talent in a very tough sport.

this is for Melly- the 3 kings are as in the pictures of ARKLE,RED RUM and DESERT ORCHID.Not what you guessed at.

  16. Charismatic hahaha... Ruffian, I like Ruffian and Man o' War, and Secretriat... and just one?
