Who is your favorite NHL play-by-play announcer of all time?

Mine is Gary Thorne. He can make the most boring of hockey games interesting. Almost has a horse-racing feel to his call of the game. Unfortunately, with no more ESPN coverage of hockey, he isn't on very much anymore.

  1. Bob Cole.

  2. Rick Jennerett's calls are the best Lalalalalafontaine

  3. Rick Jeanneret

  4. A HEARTY second for Bob Cole! He and Pat Summerall (NFL) are  on the same stellar level in my book.

  5. Mike Lange.

  6. my favorite is Doc Emmerick but he is nothing without chico

  7. Rick Jennerett !

  8. Rick Jeanneret - this guy is not even the announcer of my favorite team,

but he makes the games so fun to watch.

These Sabres fans are so lucky to have him!

  9. Gene Hart

  10. ken kal.

  11. Doc Emrick with the help of his trusty sidekick, Chico Resch.  They are the dynamic duo!  They are so funny and they have the best stories.  And Doc really knows his stuff, and Chico's there to make the telecasts interesting.

  12. Mike Lange is simply the best.

  13. Easily Gary Thorne. He was born to call hockey games. He has one of those rare voices that is recognizable by everyone that has heard him call a game. He put so much enthusiasm into every bit of the game. Losing Gary Thorne as a hockey announcer was one of the things that bummed me out the most about ESPN not covering hockey anymore.

  14. Mike Lange is and always was the man.

  15. Rene Lecavallier, voice of the Canadiens French-language games for many years

  16. Another vote for Mike Lange.

  17. Mike Lange

  18. Emerick whips my ace....

Thorne is very good, but pretty dry in the yuks department.

My favorite is my home town Stars announcer Ralph Strangis. He is the best, especially when paired with his usual color guy Daryl "Razor" Reagh.

    I miss hockey already.......

  19. Fred Cusick was the best. He could give you the chills like no one else.

  20. Howie Rose is awesome... he is great at hockey and baseball! :)

  21. Mike Lange, no competition.

  22. Jim Hughson is easily one of my favorites.

  23. The real test of play by play is the ability to broadcast both on television and on radio and do a great job. Close your eyes and listen to today's play by play men. You would have no idea as to what is going on with the game. There were only three who could do that with regularity. Foster Hewitt and Danny Gallivan did remarkable jobs for HNIC for many years. Not watching the game in French that often I understand that Rene Lecavalier had these qualities. The other English speaking announcer who did this was Bill Hewitt, Fosters son.
