  1. Mahatma Gandhi

  2. Socrates is the best because he practiced what he preached and he inspired hundreds of people to follow him and become philosophers as well like Plato Xenophon Aristotle Zeno of Citium......

  3. Cardinal Newman.  For sheer beauty of writing style, none is better.  He'll start off with a statement and you go "How in the wor- ...?"  but then he starts from point 1 and then moves to point 2 and by the time he gets to point 6 or 9 or11, you say "Well, of course it is.  How could it be anything else.  His main writings were on the value of a university, liberal education, and man's free will.  a true genius

  4. They are all full of it in their own way, but you can still learn something from them.

I guess my favorite is Socrates--but that is more for his teaching method than his beliefs.  Of course, there is some kind of genius in always asking the questions--look at how smart Alex Trebek seems to be.

While I think Neitzche got a whole lot wrong and was really way too into himself, you can learn something from him too, he may be my second favorite just for being interesting.

  5. Robert A Brown aka Renegade Bronx boro stand up!!!!!!!!!

  6. I like the stoics - Epictetus and Marcus Aurelius.  They believed in self discipline, control and living by principles of reason.

  7. George Carlin

  8. Plato, for he is philosophy and philosophy is Plato. Plato had him the "Dialogues", which remain as one of the priceless treasures of the world. The best of them, The Republic, is a complete treatise in itself, Plato reduced to a book. In here, we shall find his metaphysics, his theology, his ethics, his psychology, his pedagogy, his politics and his theory of art.

Thanks for asking. Have a great day!

  9. Wittgenstein and Socrates

  10. Will Rogers and George Carlin .

  11. Why, me, of course. Those other guys were just telling it as they found it, and so do I.

  12. I like most philosophers - most of them have something interesting to say.

But the one who has had the biggest impact upon me is Socrates, and this with a single statement: "The unexamined life is not worth living." Boy is he right!

Voltaire was a cosmopolitan, not a patriot. Rousseau was not a patriot either, as his primary focus was the world of feeling and emotion.

  13. Nietzsche, Jung, Marque De Sade, Kahlil Gibran, Noam Chomsky, Bernard Levin, the works and poetry of the Sikh Guru Nanak, are amongst my favourites ...

  14. Al Gore is the one who invented patriotism.

Actually, nobody "invented" it - it is simply natural for people to feel an affinity for their home.  There is nothing wrong with being proud of your neighborhood, your school, your home town, your state, or your country.

Problems arise when that pride turns to arrogance, and the belief that your country is better than all others (whether or not you have even traveled abroad!).

George Bernard Shaw had a very cynical view that "patriotism is your conviction that this country is superior to all others because you were born in it."

I prefer Mark Twain's stance, that "Patriotism is supporting your country all the time, and your government when it deserves it."
