I'm tempted to say Grover Cleveland. Washington and Lincoln each did an admirable job of leading the country in a time of crisis. Lincoln, especially, rose from mediocrity to a stellar performance. If you check the links on Grover Cleveland, though, you'll see what's so great about him.

Harry S Truman, THE BUCK STOPS HERE! He didn't blame everyone else for his mistakes, he took responsibility for his own actions. Unlike most politicians of every party today.

Even at his lowest popularity, he never changed what he knew would be seen as the right thing years later.

Abraham Lincoln. He had the guts to defy his Cabinet, Congress and everyone else to hold the Union together.

And the wisdom to find Grant. True, Grant was not as good as Lee, but Grant was like a bulldog; once he set his teeth in, he never let go.
