Asif Karim of Kenya. Although he is retired now, Asif Karim was one of the best left-arm spinners in the game during his playing days. He was a huge factor in Kenya getting to the semi-finals of the 2003 World Cup. During the match against Australia, Karim gave the Australians a scare with figures at one stage reading 8-6-2-3. (That's 8 overs, 6 maidens, 3 wickets for 2 runs !!!!!!).

He was also one of the star performers in a tri-series in India involving India and Bangladesh in 1997/8, where Kenya beat Bangladesh twice and India once to reach the finals.

Asif Karim was an all-round sportsman, and played tennis for Kenya in the Davis Cup. In fact, he is the only person in history to have captained his country in both representative cricket (ODIs) and tennis (Davis Cup) competition. Karim represented Kenya in the Davis Cup in 1988. He played two singles matches and one doubles match, losing all three matches.

Asif was also a thorough gentleman, and an educated cricketer, a fact that was apparent in post-match presentation interviews, where the commentator conducting the presentation would often pose very difficult and open-ended questions regarding why Kenya lost (which they did in most matches), and every time I saw him in this position I was highly impressed by his balanced and well thought-out answers.
