Personally mine is Frank Whiteley because he trained two of my favorites of all time Forego and Ruffian!

  1. Charlie Whittingham. He's gone now, but he was the trainer of Ferdinand.

He was "common folks" like us (meaning other small time owners and trainers)

There was nothing better than seeing Bill Shoemaker and Charlie together in the winner circle.

  2. Laz Barrera is my favorite. He was the trainer of Affirmed, the last Triple Crown winner. He also trained Bold Forbes, who won the Kentucky Derby and Belmont in 1976, and Mister Frisky, who the Santa Anita Derby. Sadly Laz passed away in 1991. Another personal favorite is Tom Smith. He was the trainer of the legendary Seabiscuit. He was known for his jokes on the press. He was also very quiet and hardly ever said a word. He passed away in 1957.

Among the trainers today that I like, I have to say Larry Jones is probably my favorite. He has trained so many great horses. Although he has never won a Kentucky Derby, he came in second both last year and this year. (RIP Eight Belles) Steve Asmussen is my next favorite. He trains Horse of the Year, Culin and most recently the winner of the Schuylerville Stakes, Jardin.

  3. Anybody but Rick Durtow.  Leroy Jolley comes to mind - he trained Genuine Risk.

  4. charlie and the shoe met them class acts
