  1. Street Sense, Curlin, and Tiago!

  2. I like Lawyer Ron and Hard Spun

  3. Lawyer Ron

  4. TIAGO!!!!! all the way. I would also put at least two dollars on Awesome Gem and George Washinton to finish third only because of their odds.

    Tiago 12-1 as of Thursday

Awesome Gem 30-1 as of Thursday

George Washington 20-1 as of Thursday

  5. This is a really tough race to handicap because you have five really good horses and many of them need things to fall in place a certain way to win.

Lawyer Ron lost only by a head to Curlin one month ago. Lawyer Ron needs to settle and relax early to run his best. If he is as rank as last time out I don't think he can win against this field. Curlin looks good but in the Haskell at Monmouth in  he never fired in the stretch and ran a lackluster third. Street Sense had a fabulous work the other day and looks razor sharp! However, if he doesn't get a come from behind rail trip he isn't the same horse. If they have him stalk the pace he might not win. I also think he sometimes plays and loafs (as in the Travers where he almost lost). If he is goofing off Saturday - not good!

Hard Spun will definitely be an early pace setter but I don't see him being able to hold off the rest of this field in the stretch. He won his last two races but the King's Bishop is a sprint and in the Kentucky Cup Classic they were not pushing Street Sense too hard - it was a prep for this Saturday.

Any Given Saturday has a chance to be an upset, he has had some great wins in recent months.

George Washington is really a longshot - he has mostly been a turf horse in Europe, not really sure how he will do on dirt. If the track is sloppy that might be to his advantage as turf horses often make a good showing on sloppy dirt. Awesome Gem and Diamond Stripes just aren't in the same class as the others. Tiago has been doing well lately but I don't think he will be the winner.

Of course, people are forgetting that it has rained a good bit this week at Monmouth and the next three days forecast rain. If the track is sloppy that could trun things upside down. Many of these horses have never run a race on a sloppy dirt track.

I'll go out on a limb and predict a superfecta of Street Sense, Lawyer Ron, Curlin, Hard Spun

  7. Street Sense, Lawyer Ron, Any Given Saturday, Curlin...  but also Tiago, Hard Spun...  I don't think Hard Spun can wire this field.  I think Tiago is a decent horse, but I don't see him beating either Street Sense or Lawyer Ron.  I don't see Curlin catching either Street Sense or Lawyer Ron [aside from his early races against mediocre competition, Curlin has not displayed an ability to pass a field of horses and make a big lead...  the only way Curlin wins nowadays is by catching the other horse at the wire.  And Curlin hasn't won back to back since his early starts.  And Curlin hated the Monmouth surface running a flat third in the Haskell].  If any horse has a chance of beating Street Sense and Lawyer Ron, it's Any Given Saturday...  he's really maturing... he's been amazing after recovering from the bruised hoof problem he got in the Derby.  He's proven that he loves the Monmouth surface.  I can see it happening for Any Given Saturday.  Lawyer Ron is certainly the best older horse.  But he's had a hard summer, running against the other great older horses...  I think Street Sense has had a more relaxing summer.  He had an easy win in the Jim Dandy, a tougher win in the Travers, but I don't think it was too much for him, then he had an easy stroll across the polytrack in the KY Cup Classic...  he didn't win, but that wasn't the point.  he had a great work over the monmouth dirt track and I think he's ready to make a fantastic showing in his final race of his career.

So...  I'm gonna have to say Street Sense, Lawyer Ron, Any Given Saturday, Curlin.

  8. Lawyer Ron or Curlin

  9. Think Curlin will win.  But, betting on Tiago since he's really improved and has a shot and for making money 12-1 odds are better than 3-1.

  10. Street Sense.

  11. What a race! All of the top horses will be here to decide the 2007 American Horse of the Year title and the 3-year-old championship at a difficult distance that challenges both speed and stamina, not just one attribute over the other.

High-powered 4-year-old Lawyer Ron, a multiple Grade 1 winner this year, is in the field as are all four ultra high-class 3-year-olds who dominated the spring and summer classics: Kentucky Derby - Travers winner Street Sense; Preakness - Jockey Club Gold Cup winner Curlin; Haskell Invitational winner (at Monmouth) Any Given Saturday; and Hard Spun, second in the Derby and third in the Preakness, who also won a pair of Grade 1 stakes with his terrific early speed.

At their respective best, they are so close together that it is difficult to imagine a convincing betting favorite at odds under 3-1. Moreover, the eventual favorite will have a large group of serious horses bidding for the winning purse.

Hard Spun could certainly use an inside post and a comfortable trip to the backstretch without being forced into suicidal early fractions. But even if he gets away from the pack early, any of the leading contenders may be able to run him down while they simultaneously battle in close quarters with narrow margins for error.

Beyond the 'big five' cited above, there also is stretch running Tiago, winner of the Santa Anita Derby (G1) in April and the Pacific Classic (G1) at Del Mar in August. Another possible threat is George Washington, the highly rated European-based turf horse who is expected to switch to this race instead of the Breeders' Cup Mile.

  12. I want Curlin.  But Lawyer Ron's gonna be tough.
