magellan upon reaching islands of the philippines sought to have political influence over the natives and decided to ally with a local chieftain who was feuding with lapu lapu.  magellan, together with only a few spanish soldiers, and refusing the help of his local ally, faced off with lapu lapu and his warriors. magellan intending by this bravado to demonstrate spanish superiority as he   remembered only too well cortez and a hundred or so spanish soldiers conquering an entire continent. magellan and his men were attacked and killed as they waded the shore. their muskets were ineffective against the onslaught of the attack and the cannons from their ships were too far to help them.
