Who killed science in the Islamic world?

2 Scientific Nobel Prize winners (less than New Zealand), no research universities in the "Shanghai 500" list (or indeed anyone's list of the world's leading research universities) and a general science output that is a fraction of Israel's (despite a more numerous population), yet no shortage of cash. Why this complete dearth of scientific achievement that dates from the 11th century.

What changed? Weren't they world leaders in science? (900 years ago)

  1. No one killed science in the islamic world.  They are using science to build nuclear power plants, bombs, missiles and so on.

  2. No kidding- and 900 years ago- Islam was "brand new" so obviously whatever was going on then, was based on what went BEFORE islam got a hold.

  3. radicalism killed science in the islamic world.  when ever science discovers something something doesnt like some people are all ways left behind.

  4. don't think it's killed yet. i know this guy who is a muslim and he is a teacher of science at a university. and he is funny too. mst muslims aren't

  5. Jihad happened.

It's unfortunate, because Muslim scholars at one point were way ahead of their Western counterparts. Islamic mathematicians were actually the ones that came up with the concept and number 'zero' (something that was, surprisingly, not present in Roman numerals). Now, not so much.

  6. science doesnt breathe....

  7. there is no such thing as islamic science. after conquest of persia, muslims just translated the persian scientific books into arabic and renamed it islamic science. so muslims were not world leaders in science but p****y.

  8. Islam had noteworthy advances in science but they were limited but definitely there.

The real rise of science cam about in post reformation Europe  in Christian Europe  where the scientific method itself was put forth by theists such as Lord Francis Bacon

There is a discussion on this in "Lectures on Calvinism"  by Araham Kuper.  You might look at the lecture on science.

Today people from Islam frequently come to the west to study engineering, science and math  and participate in the sciences at  a high level . In some areas of society some feel critical thinking is not always encouraged  .
