2 Scientific Nobel Prize winners (less than New Zealand), no research universities in the "Shanghai 500" list (or indeed anyone's list of the world's leading research universities) and a general science output that is a fraction of Israel's (despite a more numerous population), yet no shortage of cash. Why this complete dearth of scientific achievement that dates from the 11th century. What changed? Weren't they world leaders in science? (900 years ago)
