You will receive a solid academic background and extensive training in all hospitality business skills, using the best modern technology. The hospitality management curriculum emphasizes professionalism.

After graduation, you can pursue a promising career as a club manager, hotel manager, meeting and convention manager, and restaurant manager. You can also obtain positions in casinos, cruise lines, travel and tourism, resorts, and other exciting areas of the hospitality industry.

The Dallas-Fort Worth region provides excellent networking and internship opportunities with top professionals and organizations in the hospitality industry. Alumni of UNT's hospitality management program work for companies such as Applebee's, Brinker International, ClubCorp, Hilton Hotels Corporation, Hyatt Hotels Corporation, John Q. Hammons Hotels and Resorts, Marriott International, Outback Steakhouse, Starbucks Coffee Company, and Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide.

The hospitality management department hosts an annual career fair that will help you meet representatives from well-known hospitality companies. Additionally, you must complete a hospitality industry internship as part of your degree requirements.

UNT's Career Center can help you prepare to pursue your career. The center has information about jobs and employers, and the staff can help you with resume and letter writing, job search strategies, and interview preparation.

Majoring in hospitality managementUNT's hospitality management program will prepare you for management positions within the hospitality industry. The program is accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Programs in Hospitality Administration (P.O. Box 400, Oxford, Md. 21654, telephone 410-226-5527). That accreditation means the program has passed strict academic standards for excellence in education.

As a hospitality management major, you will examine issues and problems that are challenging the industry. In your classes, you will learn about dining room service and management; food preparation and sanitation; hospitality cost controls, properties management and facilities design; hotel operations; and nutrition. In addition, you will complete hospitality business courses in accounting, business law, finance, human resources, management and marketing.

You will receive hands-on, specialized learning by working at The Club at Gateway Center, the on-campus student-operated restaurant. You will spend two semesters at The Club managing a dining room, a commercial kitchen and a staff to learn food production and presentation techniques. You will also gain insight into the industry through field trips to places such as the Dallas Country Club, Delaney Vineyards, the Four Seasons Hotel, the Gaylord Texan, the Great Wolf Lodge and Resort, Pappas Restaurants, TGI Friday's, and the W Hotel.

In addition, you will attend lectures and meet executives in the hospitality field through UNT's executive-in-residence program. Hospitality industry members help shape the degree program and contribute thousands of dollars each year to scholarships for hospitality management students.

The hospitality management faculty members are well-qualified leading professionals who have academic and industry experience. In addition, they are recognized experts, conducting research on issues such as ecotourism, nutrition, hotel management, special event management, restaurant management and technology in the hospitality industry.

The program includes an endowed faculty position, the Dedman Chair in Club Management, which is sponsored by ClubCorp.

Getting hands-on experienceThe School of Merchandising and Hospitality Management will require you to complete an internship in your field of study. Hotel, restaurant and club companies throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth region and in other locations regularly provide paid internships through the school.

Upon completion of 12 semester hours at UNT with at least a 2.5 GPA, you may work in a job related to your major through UNT's Cooperative Education and Internships office. Co-op employers pay extremely well, and the jobs usually last several semesters, often until graduation.

More than 1,800 employers work with the office to provide excellent learning opportunities, many of which become permanent full-time positions upon graduation. The office also assists with placing students in internships, which last for one full semester or summer.
