  1. Former Prime Minister Paul Keating.  Best known quote, of an opposition politician: "A shiver looking for a spine to run up".  Master of invective.

When something is useless - "About as much use as an ashtray on a motorcycle."

The Australian hamburger comes with tomato, lettuce, fresh onion, often other salad vegetables and sometimes sliced beetroot.  (I don't like beetroot).

Corned silverside.  This is cured salted beef, low in fat and boiled.  Served with boiled carrot, potatoes, beans or peas.    When cold, served with tomato or salad or used in sandwiches with sweet mustard pickles or Worcestershire sauce.

A lot of S-E Asian and Indian, Greek, Turkish or Italian style food.  Home stir fries are common, they might not really be Chinese but they are Chinese or Vietnamese influenced.

Within ten minutes drive of this place I can buy a slew of African and Asian groceries, goat and kangaroo meat.  There are Ethiopian, Indian, Chinese, Thai, Greek, Turkish and American style restaurants.

I could join the Hellenic (Greek), Croatian, Italian, Burns (Scots), Tradesman's, German or Slovenian clubs.  Some are bigger than others, the biggest locally is the Southern Cross (largely Catholic but open to all) or the  Hellenic (largely Greek but open to all) clubs.

Roast leg of lamb.  Boiled prawns, generally served with a tartar sauce, as they come or sometimes with garlic (not shrimp, and not barbecued).

Crab as crab meat or in the shell.  Several varieties.

"Coming the raw prawn" = Attempting to deceive.

A "furphy"  = A story that sounds like it might be true but almost certainly is false.

Both these sayings are close to obsolete.

Mustard in Australia is usually the hot English style,  the hotter the better in my opinion.

Clothing - there is nothing exceptional about Australian clothing. People generally do not go about wearing Driza-Bone jackets or RM Williams moleskin jeans.  RM Williams stuff is very good but it's also very expensive.

At the moment I'm wearing a cable knit wool sweater over a poly-cotton dress shirt and Levi Strauss jeans.
