Who knows bout gauging ears?

Question

I just started by putting in a 14 gauge, but i accidentally made them infected,

so my dad had told me to take them out and put my normal earring in to let them heal, but not close in?

was this a good idea, and do you think i permanently damaged them to where i cant gauge them anymore?

Gauged ears often times get infected, or it seems like they are when they aren't.

It's no big deal.
