The first answer was spot on, but I want to add some crucial detail that they missed.

- Sharing files is illegal. Whether its uploading or downloading it doesn't matter. The difference is that it is much easier to find people who upload and download as opposed to those who only download. To find downloaders requires days of work and usually you need to already have a name before you can do anything. Finding uploaders is pretty much a one click task... there's the difference.

- uTorrent is the best program for torrents in my opinion, there are literally thousands though and they're all free. It comes down to personal preference I guess.

- Programs like uTorrent by default will automatically begin uploading files to other people on the internet as soon as you have finished downloading that file or even as you are downloading it. The only way to stop it from doing this is to go into the settings of the program and to disable that feature. This requires some medium to advanced knowledge about how the program works and how torrents in general work. If you've never downloaded a torrent you won't figure it out in one day.

- To protect yourself from getting caught I suggest you register with "BT Guard" ($7.00/month). Also "Peer Guardian 2" is highly recommended. Use Google to find more info on those two things. Its a lot to explain on here so I won't go into that detail, email me if you need more info.

Any idiot can download files, it takes some skill and street smarts to keep from getting caught. But mostly there is not certain safety, or 100% protection, mostly it comes down to keeping the statistics on your side.
