Who knows how to speak fluent Cantonese?

Question

I have been learning for three year now, off and on, using books with the help of friend. But every time I speak Cantonese, the Chinese constantly say the same thing-"I understand you, but your tones are wrong." I want to go to Hong Kong one day, but I do not want to be a dumb terroist unable to speak the language everyone else is speaking. Is anyone willing to help me?

Firstly, getting something wrong does not make you a terrorist.

You learned for 3 years... That lets me I presume that your method is not very efficient. I presume you use mainly learning material, that's not the best way to learn a language.

Get canto movies and TV stuff. Listen, listen, listen, listen, listen, listen, listen.

Tones are really not important at all. Just go with the flow and sound natural. The information comes from the context, not the tones.

Try watching TVB movies, and make sure you get the cantonese version with english subtitles.

You should be able to pick up faster than books.

Books may be good but my suggestion is for you to watch Cantonese drama series/movies with subtitles to improve the standard of your Cantonese.  Take good note of the intonation and practice saying it to yourself till you get it right.  You will also be able to learn more interesting phrases in this way.  Don't be afraid to also practice and discuss what you have learned with your Cantonese speaking friends and ask them to correct you when you don't get the right tones.  With perserverance, you will definitely improve.  I know it works,  because I did it this way.

P.S

I am currently learning to speak the Shanghainese dialect from my girlfriend.  I think I get the words right and sound very natural but well.... she just doesn't understand what I'm saying.  Guess I'll have to put in more effort too!
