Hi community member's,

Who knows the name of the insect or bug that makes a buzzing/screeching noise? I think it's coming from the tree tops (but I don't see anything & not sure) outside my 3rd floor window. If it helps in Mn. I will return to give a best answer or what I feel is the best. Have a good weekend. :0)

Additional Details: Just recently started hearing the noise & can hear over the planes taking off & landing. Possibly since June-present but I've had air on. Fall a favorite time of year.

  1. You are hearing the mating calls of cicadas pupae that have developed underground, crawl up a tree, building, tires of your car and emerge as an adult.  The adults do not feed but quickly find a mate with which to reproduce, lay eggs and die.  The eggs are laid under the bark of tree twigs where they hatch.  The larvae fall to the ground, burrow into the earth, feed on the roots of plants for a year, three years, five years or more before again emerging to continue the cycle of life.  Use this link to read about the insect that is so noisy:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cicada  Keep in mind that you are hearing the "love song" of an insect that has a very short time to live as an adult!

  2. It does sound like a cicada-however i generally have only heard them in large numbers- i suppose the closest thing they sound like is crickets

Interestingly enough I believe each species have unique calls, like frogs, or birds

  3. Sounds like the annual cicada. (aka "Dog Day cicada") Extremely loud, esp. in the heat of mid-day, very active in August.

Click on link below to multimedia to hear the cicadas' call. Very cool.

Note: Adult cicadas do feed on plant saps. See below from:

"No, cicadas do not chew – they have no chewing mouthparts, and they feed (drink, really) more like aphids.  Adult and nymphal cicadas feed on plant sap called xylem - the watery part of the plant sap - which they suck up through their proboscis (feeding tube).  Feeding by periodical cicadas does not seem to affect trees and shrubs very much because they take only a small fraction of the water passing through."

  4. It's a cicada. They rub their wings all summer to attract a mate
