  1. Ah, schools.

  2. A few different people and orgs. Which era are you thinking of?

The Freedman's Board played a large role in helping fund and organize schools for black ppul after slavery ended.

Carter Godwin Woodson wrote a lot about the education of black ppul in America. He's a great read.

All sorts of people were involved

Derrick Bell has written some interesting articles informed by critical race theory on how integration of schools has hurt black education.

My best bet as to whom yr prof is referring in her/his question is Thurgood Marshall. The NAACP lawyers who argued the Brown v. Board cases before the supreme court  were led by Thurgood Marshall, who later became the first African American to serve on the Supreme Court.

The movement is still going on, there are still lots of different leaders, and still a lot to be done.
