  1. My boyfriend loves them, and always begs me to make them, but they are so much work!

I tell him if he assembles them, I will make the filling.

  2. LOVE to eat them!  I make my own as well - they are similar to the Puerto Rican pastele, which I also make.

I'm a very picky cook - I cook the meat (the part that goes inside of the tamale - Puerto Ricans call it metura) for a good 3 days ... I keep it on a low heat and I totally baby it so it shreds and falls apart nicely, and I won't make the tamales until the meat is just right.  Then I make the masa (the outer part of the tamale), prepare the husks, spread the masa, add the metura, roll and steam.  YUMMM!

For the record - the "mushy corn stuff" is no more than grits, or polenta ... corn meal mush, basically.  Granted there's more that goes into it and it's seasoned differently, but basically the same deal.  I'd rather have polenta or tamales any day than bland old grits - JMO.

    Blessings

  3. I like the Central American kind that are all corn.  I don't find them mushy.

  11. I LOVE them.

Also there are other types besides the common, red chili/meat/corn masa. Even sweet desert types.

Banana leaves are used in place of the corn husks in some areas.

  12. that would be us mexicans...they are awesome the best places to buy them are flee markets because those are home made and try the ones in banana husk they are really good too  My abuelita makes some with potatoes oh they are to die for

  13. DUMP THAT IGNORANT MUTT....

  14. i love them!  my grandma makes the best ones i've ever tasted!

  15. They are the best things in the world. Although it depends who makes them and with what. I have family members who add sugar and raisons, and like mentioned above, with other things and even banana leaves. The banana leave ones that are sweet are yummy, but hey to each his own. Has he even tried them? or is he judging them by their look? If he hasnt tried them hes missing out. Theres lots of things out there that dont look so good but if you try it youll be amazed. For instance, octopus, gross looking but awesome tasting! You just keep on eating them, dont mind him... like we say in spanish. no quiere? pues que le vaya bien, vete a la arroyo!
