The Yeah Yeah Yeah's only got popular because it took you americans 25 years to catch up with british postpunk.

Postpunk occured in  the early eighties, soon after Punk peaked.  Bands that were inspired by the s*x pistols, The Buzzcocks and the like began experimenting with strange rhythms, more complicated guitar playing.  There were some similar efforts in the states, Talking  Heads and television and all, but nobody  bought there stuff.  Post punk evolved in the late eighties into New wave such as New Order and classic goth like Bauhaus.

British post punk is a bleak movement of brilliant bands from the late 70s/early 80s. That said, YYYs are so not like Joy Division.

Souxie and the Banshees maybe, but they are more gothic than post punk.

There's a lot of sonic youth in them actually, check out Kool Thing
