  1. I read the news today oh, boy

Four thousand holes in Blackburn, Lancashire

And though the holes are rather small

They had to count them all

Now they know how many holes

It takes to fill the Albert Hall

    I'd love to turn...you...on...

  2. Its a lancashire town that historically did well with the cotton industry and so on but now is not an exciting place just another town they forgot to close down

  3. I go there once a year to watch Everton play football at Blackburns ground and from what i see its just a small lifeless town.

  4. I travel through Blackburn about once a month on the way to visit my mother in law who lives in a village a short bus ride away.

Blackburn is not quite a city on the scale of Preston or Lancashire, but it is far larger than a market town.

Trains from York, Preston, Manchester and Blackpool all pass through plus it is connected to nearby towns like Burnley, Nelson and Darwen. There are plenty of buses which stop in front of the train station, which has been rebuilt. It also sits on a canal and motorway.

The city has seen a lot of retail development both in the centre and on the outskirts, a lot of this is made of bland branded boxes but includes a cinema, bowling alley and superstores.

They are working hard to improve the traditional market area. They are tearing down much of the shopping centre for a new version, there are fountains and landscaping along the streets and there are plenty of lovely old buildings like the cathedral and art gallery to enjoy. There are a number of posh shops, delis and an old fashioned department store. There is a college, indoor aquatic complex and lots of good pubs.

Most of the housing stock comprises brick terraces so there is not much greenery. These march up the hillsides in dense rows. The posher neighbourhoods are at the top of the hill where you will find some grand Victorian villas, parkland, garden allotments and even a wooded forest.

The city has a large Asian population so you will find curry houses, sweetshops and minarets mingled amongst the pubs, Georgian terraces and church spires. Apparently one-fifth of the population is Muslim which makes it the highest concentration outside London.

It is superbly situated for enjoying the countryside and is close to Pendle Hill, the gorgeous town of Whalley with its ruined abbey and Clitheroe with its hilltop castle.
