Who loses if the NBA Season gets cancelled? – NBA Lockout Special (Part -1)
As it currently stands, the lockout seems to be going nowhere, with both the owners and the players unwilling to compromise. If the two parties continue to linger on their fight over money, not only will an entire NBA season be
lost, many dwindling careers and rising aspirations, shall forever be lost in the ashes of time.
There are many teams and in them there are many players who are on the brink, and in the twilight of their careers, they cannot afford such stoppages.
To start with, the Boston Celtics have an ageing trio in Ray Allen, Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce. Allen will soon be 37, Garnett will be 36 and Pierce will be 35. Not only have the trio been extremely successful with each other,
they are Boston’s last hope of competing for a championship for some time now.
A lost season will be a huge blow to their personal endeavours as well. Even if the three of them are able to maintain a certain level of fitness and do return after the lost season, they will probably have become mere shadows
of themselves.
Then there is the legendary Kobe Bryant, the man who is on a mission to chase down Jordan’s six championships and not to mention Shaq’s point tally. The ‘black mamba’ will soon be 34 and that is not going to help him in anyway.
He has already lost a step and the next season somehow appears to be more crucial than any other for Kobe. If Kobe fails to get a sixth ring on his hand next season, unless a miracle happens, he and the Lakers are not going to win the championship.
Next in line is Dirk Nowitzki and his Dallas Mavericks, the reigning NBA Champions. What Dallas achieved this year, with a team full of old aged men, was truly remarkable. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that the 2012-2013
season is realistically the last chance for players like Nowitzki and Kidd to once again compete for the ultimate prize.
How can anyone forget the Phoenix Suns point guard, Steve Nash? The two times ‘Most Valuable Player' has been a true asset to the game. He will soon be turning 39 and if the lockout does not end soon, then you can very well say
goodbye to a true legend, albeit in the most shameful manner possible.
Yes, most of the big names in the NBA are in the twilight years of their careers and nothing could be sadder than to see such great names go out with a whimper. Everyone, irrespective of which team they support, wants to see these
names continue for as long as possible and a lost season is certainly not going to help the cause.
