Who loses if the NBA Season gets cancelled? – NBA Lockout Special (Part -2)
Let us now shift our focus to the other end of the spectrum; yes, the players who on the verge of breaking out in the league. Let us start with Blake Griffin and Kevin Love, two of the most dominant forces in the power forward
position last year. Not only did they have exceptional seasons, they are the next big things.
There is a grave danger that they might lose their exceptional run of form, if they have to wait out the next year. What a waste of talent it would be to see Blake Griffin return with an inability to dominate the basket.
Okay, so Griffin and Love at least managed to play out their first season. What about Kyrie Irving of the Cleveland Cavaliers, the number one draft pick this year? Or maybe the number two pick, Derrick Williams of the Minnesota
Timberwolves?
Not only will it be a painful wait out for the excited rookies, the Cavs and the Wolves will have to continue living in the miserable state in which they ended last season. Both are desperate to see the sun shine over them.
Wait, there is more. All NBA fans are eager to watch Jimmer Fredette of the Sacramento Kings and Kemba Walker of the Charlotte Bobcats in action as soon as possible. Walker has been lighting up the summer leagues with Brandon Jennings
and everything seems to be so exciting about these young guns.
A little shift of focus to the teams in general turns one’s attention to clubs like the Golden State Warriors and Detroit Pistons who just hired new coaches. What are Mark Jackson and Lawrence Frank expected to do while the game
is at a standstill. It will only create further pressure on them in the following season.
Others such as the Memphis Grizzlies, Philadelphia 76ers and the Oklahoma City Thunder made good progress last season and would be desperate to continue building on the development they have made. A year’s gap could so easily throw
them back to the bottom of the pits they did so well to rise from.
If we picture a scenario where the owners win, then we are in for a totally revamped NBA system. The salaries of players will decrease, the concept of free agents will no more remind anyone of the Wild West and trading of players
is expected to become an even more arduous procedure. In short, the financial system will be completely overhauled.
So basically, this is exactly the sort of gloom that awaits us if the NBA season gets cancelled. Even if the owners get their wish and things get resolved, it is not to say that the NBA will be the same as we left it last year.
The question is not whether it will be better or worse, it is more along the lines of whether you are ready to embrace the new NBA or not?
Either way, the bottom line is that no NBA fan wants to see the season get cancelled and they have every right to demand that the issue be resolved as soon as possible. After all, it is the fans that run the league, not the players
or the owners.
