  1. Definitely the Italians.

  2. Who "invented" pizza?

    Who can tell you?

But if you consider "what is pizza" ..then you can get closer to the origin.

For sure Greeks  had the "bread" when the Romans conquered Greece. They preferred the new solid food and imported it into the Roman Empire and it became immediately a substitute of "puls" (polenta, soft cooked corn flower).  The Germans (Germani), at that time allied with the Romans enjoyed the roman bread.

Some years later..(1540 a.D.) a public record, in the area near Naples (ITALY)  noticed for the first time  that someone was producing "petzas" (read "pee-zzah).

It was a "white pizza" with garlic, oregano and olive oil.

Tomatoes were introduced in Europe in 1496 but..never used properly till the 19th century and  only then a "modern pizza" saw the life. Where? Anywhere in Naples! It was the food of the poor, the first fast food you can eat without stopping .

We know, for sure, who made the "pizza Margherita" (in honour of the queen Margherita visiting Naples at the end of the 19th century. The Pizzeria Brandi is still there and continues to bake good pizzas.

The Germans? They ignored pizzas till WWII  !

  3. actually the GREEKS did. I seen a show about it on the food network. But the italians stole the recipe. Notice how I lower case "italian"

  4. Can you say italians ?
