I think that they were both appropriate choices.

Obama needed someone experienced and familiar that people feel like they trust.

McCain needed someone different and unfamiliar that would make Americans curious and what would result in more attention/publicity for his campaign.

Obama should have picked a liberal to balance out the ticket.  A liberal like Kucinich or ... or ... or ...

As for McCain, picking a Republican means having to choose between conservative and reactionary.  He chose reactionary.
