  1. Meso American (Central Mexico, Yucatan peninsula, and Central America) pyramides are all basically earthen platforms. Sometimes rudimentary adobe-like bricks were the earth part of the platform. On top of each platform a smaller platform was built and so on until the pyramid shape is formed. Easily workable stone was laid over the earthen part giving the structure a more powerful and more pleasing appearance. The stone overlay probably helped preserve many of the pyramides against the long rainy seasons and the incurring vegetation of the ages.

And yes, as someone else pointed out there were temples on top the temples were often little more than huts on top of these great manmade mountains.

  2. As for HOW they built the pyramids, the building techniques are dead along with the indians that built them.

Some indian tribes carry well kept secrets about their culture that are passed on generation to generation and they won't readily reveal any secrets to outsiders that want a quick buck.

I'd find it .. odd that a school that obviously isn't a university in a career like arquitecture or mexican archeology would seriously request an assignment that nobody alive today would be expected to know.

As for why, there's some theories. The ones in Teotihuacán (Sun and the Moon) were built to worship.. the sun and te moon. They killed a human each day to please the god of the sun by ripping ther hearts while the sacrifice was still alive.

The Chichenitzá pyramid is actually a really large calendar using the old calendar system. The building is mathematically perfect.

  3. Mexicans of Course

Unlike Egyptian pyramids, Mesoamerican pyramids are typically step pyramids with a temple at the peak. Different Mesoamerican civilizations created a number of pyramids in various sites all over Mexico.

The Great Pyramid of Cholula is the second tallest pyramid in the world and the largest in the New World, with a height of over 200 ft. Located in Puebla, the pyramid was made for Quetzalcoatl. A church, known as the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios, lies on top of the pyramid.

The Aztecs, whose capital lay in Tenochtitlan, built the Great Pyramid. Also known as the Templo Mayor, the Great Pyramid was the chief temple of the Aztecs. The temple was decorated with shrines to their gods Tlaloc and Huitzilopochtli. The Great Pyramid can be found in Mexico City.

The Mayas also built a number of pyramids. One of their most popular pyramids is El Castillo in Chichen Itza in the Yucatan Peninsula. El Castillo is another step pyramid, dedicated to Quetzalcoatl. Another famous Mayan site is Palenque in Chiapas. This site is composed of a number of step pyramids, such as the Temple of the Cross and the Temple of the Sun. Other Maya pyramids include Structure 2 in Calakmul; the Temple of the Masonry Altars in Altun Ha in Belize; and the unique Adivino in Uxmal in Yucatan.

The Teotihuacanos built the second largest pyramid in the New World, known as the Pyramid of the Sun. Beside it is another pyramid, the Pyramid of the Moon. Other Teotihuacan pyramids can be found in Xochicalco in Morelos and Tula in Hidalgo.

The Totonacs also built the Pyramid of the Niches in El Tajin in Veracruz. The Tarascans also built step pyramids in the shape of a T, known as yacatas, in Tzintzuntzan in Michoacan. The Zapotecs also built step pyramids in Monte Alban in Oaxaca.
