Who made these little holes?

I trimmed off some bark off a tree months ago and saved them for firewood, but today I noticed billions of tiny holes on all of them. I'm not sure if the live bark has these, but I'm very curios on what made these tiny holes. They are perfect circles about less then a millimeter in diameter. Ants? Birds?
