It depends on the employer. The private sector is going to pay more, in general, than the public sector. However, job security is much better for plumbers and scientists in the public sector. In addition, many choose to go back to academe so that they can drain the next generation of scientists. Endowed chairs can sometimes make over $200k, depending on the institution.

of course that depends on the employer. private sector  pay more, in general, than the public sector. but I think that rocket scientists in general is more than rocket plumbers
