  1. The origin of the name "Canada" comes from the expedition of explorer Jacques Cartier up the St. Lawrence River in 1535. The Iroquois pointing out the route to the village of Stadacona, the future site of Quebec City, used the word "kanata," the Huron-Iroquois word for village. Jacques Cartier used the word Canada to refer to both the settlement of Stadacona and the land surrounding it subject to Chief Donnacona.

  2. Another story is that a Spanish wanderer saw the mainland and said "Aca nada", meaning "Nothing here".

  3. There is a website called "Historica" which offers really interesting "History by the Minute" videos. These videos play as commercials on Canadian television and offer people insight as to important moments in Canada's history.

You may want to review the one for Jacques Cartier, which I have copied the link to below.

  4. The First nations people called it Kanada but it got changed later on

  5. Some exsplorer butchered and indian word.  Can't remember names.

  6. Canada is another example of a lost white man asking the locals where he was. It is a good thing they told him he was in their village and the country is called "village".

If they had been rude to him, the country could have been the local word for "get lost white man".

That's the trouble with tourists and explorers. They believe anything the locals tell them.

  7. Almost all Canadian names are Native. Provinces, many cities, and the country as well. There are a tonne of Native groups in Canada.

  8. "The name Canada most likely comes from a St. Lawrence Iroquoian word kanata, meaning "village" or "settlement". In 1535, inhabitants of the present-day Quebec City region used the word to direct explorer Jacques Cartier toward the village of Stadacona.[6] Cartier used the word 'Canada' to refer to not only that village, but the entire area subject to Donnacona, Chief at Stadacona. By 1545, European books and maps began referring to this region as Canada."
