  1. The World Meteorological Organization uses 6 lists of 21 names, each beginning with each letter of the alphabet (except Q, U, X, Y and Z) in rotation. The same names are reused every 6 years.

The only time a new name is added is if a hurricane is very deadly or costly, then the name is retired and a new name is chosen, for example Katrina was retired and replaced by Katia.

Whenever a new hurricane forms, it is assigned the next name in the list. So the first hurricane of the year is given the name beginning with "A", the second with "B", etc.

The 2008 list of names is as follows:

    Arthur

    Bertha

    Cristobal

    Dolly

    Edouard

    Fay

Gustav (recently hit the Gulf coast)

    Hanna (currently in the Atlantic)

    Ike (currently in the Atlantic)

    Josephine (currently in the Atlantic)

    Kyle

    Laura

    Marco

    Nana

    Omar

    Paloma

    Rene

    Sally

    Teddy

    Vicky

    Wilfred
