  1. An I-134 is not required to obtain a J1 visa.

    To apply for a J1 you will need the following:

    - A completed DS-156

    - A completed DS-158

    - A completed DS-157 (if applicable)

    - A DS-2019 - Certificate of Eligibility for Exchange Visitor Status;

    - Pay a visa application fee; (if you are being sponsored by the U.S. government, you are not required to pay a visa application fee)

    - Your passport

    - One photograph which meets State Department regulations.

    For financial support you must present evidence of funds to cover all of your expenses; bank statements and affidavits of support if the funds are not your own. An affidavit of support can be a written and signed letter.

    If the terms of the exchange visitor grant will cover the living expenses and other costs, the fully completed DS-2019 will be sufficient.
