I don't wish to show my ignorance, but one can't know everything.

I'd be very appreciative if you could enlighten me

  1. Yes as the other two said, he was a fictional character in the 60s, WAY before your time which is why you were patted on the head.

I read in one of your answers that your dad had an 'MI' recently, sorry to hear that, i don't know what an mi is! but doesn't sound good and i am sorry to hear that. So did he go to hospital? did you nurse him in bed or bed bath him? do you enjoy putting catheters in males?

did your dad ever come in your room at night when you were a kid?

  2. Hi Rhianna, in an earlier answer I referred to him as my original inspiration to enter medicine. My first contact with him was is 1962, when the series Dr. Finlay's Casebook was first shown on the BBC in gray and white. It told the story of a go ahead young GP in practice, in the 20s, with a gentle old codger who was not so up to date but had had more experience.  After watching this charming series until 1971 I was hooked, decided I wanted to be a GP.  When I came up to Scotland to study I once made a pilgrimage to visit 'Arden House' set in the mythical village of Tannochbrae where Dr Finlay practiced. In fact the building is a house in Callender in Stirling.

I once tried to read the books but found them very dry, however a remake was made in 1993, I am afraid I have this as well, you can watch it when you come up to visit the Water Palace  after  you have finished the Carry on films. I don't have the original series.

  3. Dr Finlay was a fictional character in books written by the Scottish author A.J. Cronin . The stories were later adapted into a television series .

  4. Hiya Rhianna,

Dr. Finlay is a fictional character, the hero of a series of stories by Scottish author A. J. Cronin. The stories were used as the basis for the long-running BBC television programme, Dr. Finlay's Casebook, screened from 1962 to 1971. Based on Cronin's novella entitled Country Doctor, the storylines centered on Dr. Finlay's general medical practice in the fictional Scottish town of Tannochbrae during the late 1920s. The main characters were Dr. Finlay, a junior partner in the practice, played by Bill Simpson, Dr. Cameron, the craggy senior partner, played by Andrew Cruickshank, and Janet, their unflappable housekeeper and receptionist at Arden House, played by Barbara Mullen. Dr. Finlay returned to television with the ITV series, Doctor Finlay, which featured David Rintoul as Dr. Finlay, Ian Bannen as Dr. Cameron, and Annette Crosbie as Janet. It later aired in the U.S. on PBS' Masterpiece Theatre.
