  1. A notary is simply someone who has been granted by the law to verify that documents have been signed legally.  They witness someone signing documents and verify with their own signature and official seal that they witnessed the action.  Not very complicated.

All banks, most real estate offices and car dealships will have at least one notary on site to handle legal documents that require notarized signatures.  Most will charge a dollar or two for the service.

  2. Almost any branch of a bank will have one.

They basically Attest signatures, which means they make sure it's really you, and you voluntarily sign whatever it is.

  3. All attorneys at law are notaries public, and many of them employ legal secretaries or para-legals who also hold that status.  So the first place to look might be an attorney's office.

Closer to home, most banks and car dealerships have a notary on staff to provide that service to their customers and to notarize loan documents.  This would be your best way to find a notary.  Otherwise, you could check at the county courthouse (where notary commissions are recorded) or your state's secretary of state office to find a list of notaries in your area.

As a last resort, you could check the yellow pages under "notaries," although most notaries don't advertise their services that way unless it is an essential part of their business.

  4. A person certified by your state of residence to witness your signature on legal documents.  Every bank has one in the house... every attorney office... most real estate firms, and there are private ones listed in the phone book in a lot of areas.  Not hard to find at all.

They usually charge a couple of bucks to stamp your papers, and will require photo ID from you when you sign.  Don't sign the papers early, you need to do it in person in front of the notary in order for them to witness it.

  5. They are people who verify that you signed a document (in front of them).  Try "The Yellow Pages".
