  1. There are many good shredder makers but unfortunetly many more bad ones.  Avoid the cheap little ones like fellows.  They are slow and designed to freeze up and require a replacement.  They are also less secure because they cut the paper which is easier to re-assemble.  Get one the tears the paper apart at the fibers.  The two I would recommend are SSI and Vecoplan.

  2. The only one I know of and use is Fellowes.

When you buy a paper shredder, make sure the wheels are close enough together to shred the paper AND make confetti of the shredded paper.

You also want to make sure about the capacity or shredding ability of the shredder.

Some shredders will shred only a few sheets of paper at a time. If you have LOTS of papers, old checks and documents to shred, you may want to make the investment in a heavy duty shredder which can shred up to 15 pieces of paper at a time.

The lower-priced shredders make strips and the spaces between the shredding wheels are further apart.

There are services which shred paper and documents. I called a few and asked. Here's what I discovered:

A] There is a base fee AND they charge by the box or by weight.

B] With the obsolete, yet important documents I wanted to have someone else shred, I wanted to watch as they were being shredded. I was informed they didn't allow folks to watch the shredding process. They issue "a certificate" as to the fact the papers were shredded.

After someone steals account numbers, Social Security numbers and otherr important information, what good is a certificate? I started - and continue - doing the job myself.

ANOTHER suggestion: Check with your bank or Federal Credit Union to see if they offer shredding services. I did this yesterday where I bank. Those wonderful folks do this AND they have a truck which goes from location-to-location [their branch offices].

Thanks for asking your Q! I enjoyed taking the time to answer it!
