Actually the HOF owns the CUP! The NHL does not own it. This was done so that leagues (teams) could not split and take it and so on. The Hall Of Fame is the OWNER  of the STANLEY CUP!

The NHL owns the Stanley Cup.  The Detroit Red Wings are the current champion.  Everyone on the team will get 24 hours to spend with the Cup but the NHL retains ownership.  The next game is the start of the regular season in October.
