I found out the first owner of the Dallas cowboys purchased the rights to the song from Corinne Griffith, m Barnee Briskin as a means of getting an induction vote from the Redskins owner. What I don't know is if the Dallas Cowboys owner gave/sold the rights back to the original writer or gave/sold the owner of the Redskins the right to use the song and not ownership.

  1. It is a pretty funny story.

When the NFL wanted to bring a team to Dallas in the early 60's The owner of the Redskins George Marshal was standing in the way.  The Redskins felt that the south was their territory and did not want another team competing for fans.

Clint Murchison bought the rights to "Hail to the Redskins" and held it hostage.  He would only allow the Redskins to use the song if Marshall approved the franchise in Dallas.

Thus was born one of the greatest rivalries in all of sports.

  2. Cowboys>skins
