  1. To answer your question, they work together, the coach and the gm talk,  they have a set style of play, the coach knows best what the teams needs to improve, and what qualifications the AC needs, the GM then talks contracts with the coach

  3. It works all different ways.

    Under ideal circumstances the coach has the most say in picking assistants. In some cases, a coach will get fired, and the new coach will get stuck with the old assistants. Or sometime a GM will hire an assistant coach who he thinks will make a good head coach in case the current coach screws up.

  4. Different teams do it differently...............Keith Acton has worked for 3 coaches in Toronto, meanwhile, Mike Babcock brought Paul MacLean with him from Anaheim.  Similarly, Roland Melanson has been an assistant coach in Montreal for 11 years serving under 5 coaches.
