    There were many theories in the past, but the most acceptable theory is that during the early age of our solar system, a large object impacted the young Earth and it threw a large chunk of molten rock into space and this rock, being in Earth gravity, orbits Earth as they both then cooled into what we now know as Moon and Earth

    This explains a lot about the elements found in the Moon.

    For example the lightning strike on Apollo 12: "The source of the bolt remained a mystery to space experts."

    Actually all observers on the ground knew, that Apollo 12 was hit by lightning (twice) during a thunderstorm.
