Well, you have to remember that if you are looking at races pre-1999, the AMA National Number system was different than it is today. Back then, every rider would be assigned a new number each year depending on their performance indoors and outdoors. It didn't matter if you were a past champion, if you had a terrible season, you can go from being #1 down to #99. Good luck and a little more information will go a long way..
