It was 26 years ago on July 6, 1975, that the great filly Ruffian broke down in a match race against Kentucky Derby winner Foolish Pleasure.

Foolish Pleasure ( who incidentally went on to have a mediocre career as a sire before finally dying in 1994 of old age) 1975, Belmont Park. The filly broke down as the two horses went past the half mile pole in the backstretch. Both jockeys later reported hearing a loud cracking sound, much like that of a firecracker exploding or a gunshot, the instant before the filly stumbled and fell. That crack was the sound of the bones in Ruffian's right foreleg shattering beyond repair.

What a sad story !!

Edit : To Rhonda- Ruffian broke down over 30 years ago, not 26 years ago. 26 years ago would have been in 1982, not 1975.
