Who recovers R12 refrigerant?

I bought a R134a conversion kit, which seems straightforward. Only thing is, I can't find a mechanic in town willing to make sure there is no R12 left in my system and recover it. Who does this? Why is everyone telling me, "no"?

most A/C shops will do this, look in your local phone book for A/C repair
