Question:

Who remembers Mark Martin's farewell tour 4 years ago?

Mark Martin is coming back for 2 more full years of racing. Not that I don't like Mark or anything, but didn't he go through a year-long farewell tour back in 2004? Assuming something doesn't change, this means he'll go at least 6 years later than that original farewell tour.

What do you think about it?

  1. i think he is not ready to retire. he can decide what he wants to do because he can

  2. He sure did.  It was called the salute to you tour and even had a special logo.

  3. LOL didn't last long did it?  IDK...maybe he just wanted to be away from Jack Rousch?

  4. He was going to retire to help out his sons racing career, but Matt's (Marks son) grades have been slipping and Mark took him out racing and he will probably begin racing again once his grades are up to Marks expectations

"During a March 8th, 2008 airing of Speed Channel's Trackside, Mark Martin (Matt's father) announced that his son Matt ended his racing career. Mark Martin stated his son wants to concentrate on his education but didn't rule out a possible return to racing."

  5. I remember it.  He's entitled to change his mind, I guess.  I wish him the best of luck, and I hope that he accomplishes his goal.

Terry Labonte didn't say that he would never race in the cup series again.  He retired from full-time racing - he didn't say he'd never race again.

EDIT:  It's all good, Jason.  You know how touchy I am about my man Terry.  lol

  6. A lot of people don't remember Mark Martin had cancer that is why he was running a limited schedule and was going to retire. He wanted to spend more time with his family . His cancer is in remission so he wanted one more shot at the cup, give him a break !

  7. I do and I think it stinks that he left Roush like he did. Mark was one of my favorites. WAS!!!

  8. I like Mark. But lets get real, why didnt Rick Hendrick put a young driver in that car? Mark is a has been and should get out while he still has the health and time for his son Matt and he wife. I really thought Rick would put Truex in that car.

  9. Well if I'm not mistaken your question is a little flawed. Wasn't 2006 his last full season in Cup racing. I think 2004 was when he said he wasn't gonna run as many Nationwide races, after he took over the all time wins total. And as far as I read, he is only coming back for one more full season in the 5 car. Then he switches back to a partial season.

  10. Seriously, it's time to get over it. If Mark Martin wants to retire after EVERY SINGLE RACE just to return the next week, then he has EARNED that right. Who are any of you to say when he needs to retire??? Why isn't anybody crying about Terry Labonte racing again, or Sterling Marlin, or the biggest joke of all Bill Elliot??? Mark Martin will step away for good when he is ready in his own mind and heart! He's still very competitive week in and week out. Mark can still get the job done and I'm all for him racing for as long as he d**n-well pleases!

Welcome to Hendrick Motorsports, Mr. Martin!!!

    THE 5 IN '09!!!

....and no, Joe D, that's wrong. Matt Martin decided to pursue other interests - namely baseball - rather than racing. They just talked about it the other day in an interview with Mark Martin. It's got nothing to do with the kid's grades. Matt just doesn't want to race anymore.

....well good for Wikipedia. As of, like, last week Mark Martin said his son was pursuing baseball.

....Yeah Lynn, I know. I was just making a point. I'm a big Labonte fan and like seeing him back on the track. I just think we should let these guys make their own decisions about when to end their careers. If you want to be angry at someone, be angry at Kyle Petty for not stepping down yet and having a huge hand in ruining the family business, not Mark Martin who is still one of the most competitive drivers each week.

  11. Obviously there wasn't one.

  12. Well now he's on a "I'm back" tour.

  13. yeah i remember mark and rusty both getting nice rocking chairs from fox during that farewell tour looks like mark should give his back , but im glad to see mark back someone as classy as mark martin deserves another shot at a title

  14. It's not that big a deal to me, if he wants to retire, come out of retirement, and retire again, they do it in other sports, too.

Mark wants to win a championship, he'll have a good shot at HMS.

I'm just dying to see how that #5 performs next year!!

hmm....how do you think Triple J's gonna handle that?
