Question:

Who requires that labels be sewn in garments?

The first thing I do with a pack of new boxer shorts is cut out the inside label that indicates the size and material content of the shorts. I do it because they irritate my skin

Inevitably, I cut the fabric on some of the shorts and thus ruin them.

Does the government require these useless labels or do the manufacturers put them in knowing that a certain percent of their shorts will be immediately ruined and so need replacement?

  1. Labelling is required by the government - the FTC to be precise.

Shop around a bit - the "Fruit of the Loom" brand I buy have the label info actually printed on the fabric, not on a sewn-in label.
