Question:

Who rows a single?

I was thinking of getting a new set of oars this season. I row an Empacher and I currently have a pair of Crokers - not all they're cracked up to be. I was just wondering type of oars other scullers prefer? Please don't say Crokers.

  1. What is the reason to change ?  Don't just change for change sake.  Correct a specific problem.

Need a bigger blade, smaller blade ? Move the button out a bit, is the grip to big, too small, too sticky, too slick ? durability ?

Raise or lower the rigging a touch ?

Maybe you'd be more comfortable switching the top hand.  I could never get comfortable left over right, so I set my scull right over left.  The scull I learned on was right over left.

Need more strength so the pull feels lighter ? Different weight workout ?

I row 2nd hand semi-ancient Pocock wooden sculls.

  2. have you ever tried using a hockey stick??

  3. Crokers *are* the world's leading oar.  Have you tried different handles/lengths/blade styles?  Go to your local boathouse or club and try out some different variations before you buy a new set or write off Croker completely.

    Also, Check out Alden's oars:

or perhaps even a custom made wood oar like these guys:

    or a cutting edge Europeanmodel:

    Good luck, and happy rowing!
