  1. When James I* died in 1625, his son, Charles I, ruled between 1625 and 1649 whereupon the English Parliament ordered his execution, and a republic under the governance of Oliver Cromwell ruled England between 1649 and 1660.  After the death of Oliver Cromwell, and the short rule of Richard, his son, Parliament recalled the son of Charles I, who was Charles II, from exile.

*James ruled England between 1625 and 1649 as James I, but he had already been ruling Scotland since he was 13-months old (in 1567) as James VI.  When he succeeded Elizabeth I on the throne of England, he simultaneously ruled England and Scotland.

  2. Charles I,then he was beheaded and a republican rule (Cromwell, then son) happened. It FAILED and the monarchy was reinstated with Charles II. Visit http://www.royal.gov/uk/output/Page74.as... for the full story.

  3. James I > Charles I (son) > Oliver Cromwell and the Commonwealth > Richard Cromwell (O's son--very brief rule) > Charles II (son of Charles I) . James II (brother) > William III & Mary II (son-in-law and daughter), Anne (sister of Mary; last Stuart monarch)
