There is a quote that says something along the lines of "Don't believe someone because they speak from a high place, or because they wear a uniform/robe. Look into it for yourself and then decide if you believe it." I think, possibly, that it is a Buddha quote, but I am not sure.

What is the direct quote and who said it?

  1. 'Don't go by reports, by legends, by traditions, by scripture, by logical conjecture, by inference, by analogies, by agreement through pondering views, by probability, or by the thought, "This contemplative is our teacher." When you know for yourselves that, "These qualities are skillful; these qualities are blameless; these qualities are praised by the wise; these qualities, when adopted & carried out, lead to welfare & to happiness" — then you should enter & remain in them.'

    - The Buddha, Anguttara Nikaya 3.65: The Kalama Sutta
