It is commonly attributed as a proverb to John Ray, who said it in his book English Proverbs in 1678: "Time and thinking tame the strongest grief."

However, it was said waaaaay back in ancient Greece in 300 BC by Menander who wrote: "Time is the healer of all necessary evils." I personally give him credit for it. :)
